the housing sits on top of cultural and athletic programs. here is a section cut through the basketball court. from the street, one can see into the court, into the open air lobby (with murals), into the transfer passageway between the 4,5,6 / future Q/ T trains, and also catch a glimpse of the pathmark entrance, also below grade.
first image: groundplan showing context. the four cultural program anchoring 125th Street include, from left to right, a multipurpose performance space, a small lap pool, a local branch of the NYPL, and a basketball court. each is enclosed with retractable glazed doors that can be opened in nice weather.
second image: 8th floor plan showing context. each quad of units is connected via shared outdoor terraces that function as outdoor living spaces in nice weather. the 8th floor is also features an expansive roofdeck for whole building use.

short animation that shows how we derived the strategy for the cultural and athletic base. it explores the section qualities of the sunken court and the ambiguous perimeter. after further refinement, this strategy was redeployed on 125th st.
in order to develop the base strategy, we analyzed the 10 block section of park avenue between 125th and 115th. we injected our housing typology into the site and determined that in order for it to function as intended we would need to meet the street condition on its terms. this chunk of park avenue is dominated by the metro north viaduct which shuttles thousands of daily commuters between grandcentral all points north. the street below is rendered valueless save for parking.
we adopted the tectonic language of the viaduct, elevated our housing typology to meet the viaduct, and submerged atheletic and cultural program below grade. they are defined by an ambiguous perimeter that allow pedestrian traffic to flow in and out freely.
axonometric progression show how the unit, shared spaces, and building essentially develop from the same concept of positive social friction is enabled by redundant circulation and ambiguous perimeters.
the space between two units is shared by both. in warm weather garage door style partition open onto the shared deck, essentially expanding the units living room space into the exterior.
